With so many advances in technology and healthcare, it only seems fitting that we utilize that technology in healthcare education. I see 3D printing as one of the big advancements in medicine. I have read articles about constructing stents and cartilage out of living tissue and implanting them in the body. That just seems crazy to me, but if it's happening, then I have an obligation to inform my surgical technology students about these advancements.

I enjoyed doing the research for this assignment, but had a great deal of trouble finding peer reviewed articles because the technology is so new.

Is it Twittering or Tweetering?

I find it hard to define my feelings with social media in today's society. There are times that I feel like Mark Zuckerberg and I really feel excited about the connectivity. At other times, I feel like the grumpy old man on his porch, yelling at the neighbor's kids to "get off my lawn!" I have been a casual user of Facebook and Instagram since the launch of these social platforms. I signed up on Twitter but could never catch the Twitter "bug". Most recently, I started using Snapchat (my students had to show me how) but I don't think that I am using it correctly. I am pretty competent with a computer, so I can't say that I fit in the realm of the digital divide, so I am going to say that I am in the social divide.  The only experience that I have with using any social media platform for professional purposes, is keeping students updated about the Surgical Technology profession through the professional organization Facebook page.  My hope

On the "Cutting Edge" of Tweeting

When I started on Twitter it was just because it was new and everyone else was doing it. It quickly became too time consuming to keep up with all of the new social media platforms. Between life, school and work, I did not put much stock in the usefulness of the social media craze. The idea of using, not just Twitter but other social media platforms, to engage in quality professional development, adds a new justification to the effectiveness and appeal of Twitter and the others. Over the past week, I have added multiple surgical hashtags to my TweetDeck and have found them to be very useful. Since I am actively engaged in my profession of surgical technology and surgical technology education, I have found much use in following these Tweets. Reflecting on Social Media in Learning

Course Reflection In terms of integrating social media in the classroom, I have always been resistant to making the change. There is stigma sometimes associated with the use of any social media, especially in the classroom. I have been in many conversations with colleagues, about how “millennials are on that damn Twitter too much!” I suppose, as a newer educator, I was conforming to the same idea as my colleagues. Perhaps they felt threatened by having the attention taken off of them, or maybe they just don’t understand it. For me personally, I was afraid that I would lose the personal connection to my students. The EDTECH program has helped me embrace technology integration in my classes. It has also helped me understand that I don’t have to, or even shouldn’t, integrate a piece of technology for the sake of just doing it.
